5 Tips Protecting your Home from frozen pipes

Baby it’s cold outside. Here are a few tips that can help prevent interior pipes from freezing in an arctic blast

1) PREVENT CLOGGED DRAINS

Clogged drains lead to standing water in your pipes. When you have water that is not moving in a pipe, it increases the possibility of freezing and breaking. You can treat your tubs and drains once a week with an environmentally friendly mix. “Make a mixture of 1 cup of salt, 1 cup of baking soda, and 1/4 cup cream of tartar. Pour equal amounts into your various drains and follow it with 2 cups of boiling water for each drain,” as stated on the American Red Cross website.

2) LET WATER DRIP FROM FAUCETS

In arctic conditions, allow water to drip from a faucet that has pipes on any exterior wall or where pipes are vulnerable to the cold. The American Red Cross says that running water, even a trickle, helps prevent pipes from freezing.

3) KEEP THE HEAT TURNED UP

Keeping your heat turned up 24/7 during an arctic blast will cost a few more dollars in heat, but can save thousands by keeping the pipes warmer.

4) OPEN CABINET DOORS

Under sinks and in some cabinets, pipes travel along the wall and are vulnerable to freezing during an arctic blast. Opening cabinet doors allows the warm air of the house to circulate and keep the pipes from freezing. Be mindful of chemicals or other toxic items that will need to be moved and stored away to be sure children and pets do not have access to them.

5) SEAL DRAFTS

It may seem obvious but an arctic draft into your home can cause pipes to freeze in a short amount of time. Walk through and inspect each floor of your home, especially bathrooms and kitchen that have exterior walls. Locate the source of the draft and seal it with an appropriate material.
